But what if you want added mid range torque that the stock muffler cannot supply? There is a good option. Crossover pipes can be added that increases air flow which is limited by the need for quiet (from the small stock muffler) and also gives better back pressure.
Other options for the Harley include short drag pipes, large diameter open pipes, long straight pipes, 2 into 1, true duals, and slip-fit mufflers. Short drag pipes have the big sound, but power is robbed since sonic and thermal waves return to the engine too fast. Though this can be overcome it still will cause a power loss on the lower end. Large diameter open pipes also give big sound quality, but have the drawback of restricting flow and thus robbing power. Long straight pipes can correct most of the issues of the first two giving you the power by increasing air flow and back pressure, but since they do not offer the throaty sound of the others riders will sometimes take out the baffles. At which time they have the same low end power problems as the large diameter opens. 2 into 1 Harley Davidson mufflers give the rider almost everything he or she wants. They get power and sound, but have to sacrifice some of the looks the others offer. True duals are best used with a crossover system because they have a great look, but can give a bike rougher idle characteristics. The slip fit or Harley slip on muffler is the most economical type because it fits alongside of the stock muffler and retains all of the positive characteristics of the custom while adding a distinctive look.
