Everyone has heard about the Harley Davidson brand of motorcycles, and some have even heard of the new Harley Davidson trike (a three-wheeled motorcycle), but few people have ever heard of, much less seen, the Harley Davidson Topper. What exactly is the Topper? It’s the one and only motor scooter ever produced by Harley Davidson, and there’s a reason why you probably haven’t seen one: the Topper was only made between 1960 and 1965.

The Harley Davidson Topper used a CVT transmission, which is actually the same type of transmission that’s used on motor scooters made today. The Topper used a 165 cc single cylinder, two stroke engine that used a mixture of gasoline and oil. The engine didn’t feature a cooling fan, and to start it, one had to use a rope-recoil starter that was similar to those found on push lawnmowers. The Topper featured a front fender, front body, and floorboards made out of stamped steel, while the rest of the body and the engine cover were made from chopper gun-sprayed fiberglass.

Harley Topper Parts Are Rare

If you’re lucky enough to own a Harley Davidson Topper, you’ve got something few other people have. If you have a Topper that actually runs, you’re in even better shape and have something very rare. However, what do you do if your Topper breaks down? Well, you have a few options. The first is to go to flea markets and search the classifieds and auctions for parts. However, the chance of finding actual Topper parts is pretty rare. Sure, you might be able to use some modern parts as replacements, especially for the transmission, but that’s not always true.

Where Can I Find Topper Parts?

So where can you find parts of your Harley Davidson Topper? The best place to look is for the internet. Even then, you’re going to have to do a lot of searching. You should try a number of places. Some auto parts sites may actually have Topper parts, but many won’t. Your best bet is actually to check online auctions like eBay. Users who have broken down Toppers or parts from a Topper often list them on auctions. If you keep an eye on these auction sites, you can often grab some Topper parts and pieces for fairly cheap. Keep in mind, of course, that since Toppers haven’t been made for over 40 years, you may have difficulty finding exactly the part you need at a good price.
