Harley Trike

Harley Powered Trike

Harley Davidson produces a lot of different motorcycles, but some people actually take the engines out of the Harley (or purchase just the engine) to put it in something else. There are a number of custom-built vehicles out there that use Harley Davidson engines, but the most popular is the trike. In fact, Harley Davidson has even created their very own trike for the 2009 line.

What is a trike, you ask? Well, a Harley Powered Trikes are to the tricycle what a motorcycle is to a standard bike. In order words, it’s a motorcycle with three wheels (or a tricycle with an engine). Some of the earlier models were actually powered by steam, but today’s trikes use the same type of engines that motorcycles do.

While there are a number of three-wheeled automobiles out there, not all of them are considered trikes. True trikes are either what is considered a tadpole or a delta.  The delta has one wheel in front and two wheels in the back, while the tadpole is the opposite—two wheels in front, one in the rear. The Harley Davidson Tri Glide Ultra, the 2009 Harley trike, is a delta, as are most trikes sold by motorcycle companies. Most use rear-wheel drive and steer with the front, although a few models do actually use the rear wheel to steer.

The tadpole configuration is actually better at braking and is less likely to roll out of control, while the delta configuration requires the front wheel to be almost perfectly aligned when braking hard. Tadpoles often under-steer as well, while deltas generally over-steer. These are just a few things to take into consideration if you’re looking at a trike.

Why a Harley Powered Trike?

So why should you buy a Harley Davidson trike instead of a motorcycle? Trikes are perfect for those who have balance problems and can’t ride a motorcycle. They’re also better for carrying passengers, have more luggage space, and simply look different. You may have never even seen a trike on the road before. If you have one, you’re sure to get attention.

But can you simply walk into any dealership and buy a Harley Davidson trike? If you’re looking for the 2009 model, yes. However, if that’s not what you want, you’ll need to buy a used trike. Many of these are custom-built jobs that use the Harley engine. They’re really amazing, but they will cost you a bit. Check out these auctions and used trikes to get an idea of what you may want.
