Harley-Davidson has been the hallmark motorcycle in the United States since it roared onto the scene. Most hard saddlebag types have metal hinges and are formed from either a hard plastic or metal case. The mounting hardware that is needed to install the bag will simply fit your hog if you decide to go stock.
If the bag you choose is aftermarket, most manufacturers will include a universal mounting system that will fit most cruisers. However, if the hardware will not allow a snug fit for the bike you own, it may be advisable to take it to a Harley dealer and have it installed. A poorly installed saddlebag can compromise the integrity of your bike. A rust or performance problem may occur that can add to the cost of your aftermarket saddle bag.
Another choice that is available, that is an easy fit, and offers the most classic look for your bike is the Harley soft saddlebag. Harley soft saddlebags can also either be purchased from the manufacturer or as an aftermarket item.
The main difference between the hard and soft saddlebags, besides the look, is the fit. A Harley soft saddlebag will easily fit onto the manufacturers hardware and allow you to change the look as you see fit. The styles are as broad as your dream look allows. The bag can be anything from one of simple leather with a belt style fastener to a more sophisticated soft leather and polyethylene mixture that clips shut and allows you to padlock the bag. The bags are also normally clipped to the bike with a simple configuration to allow you to easily remove the saddlebag. The hard saddlebags are generally bolted in place and are therefore, not as easily transportable off of the bike.
