Safety is paramount when riding any motorcycle. Although there is a grass roots organization to repeal all of the various helmet laws across the country, and helmets are known sometimes as “brain buckets,” they are an integral part of safe riding. The question is not should you be wearing a helmet, but which style.
Purveyors of the “crotch rocket ” division of motorcycle enthusiasts and those who ride motocross type bikes, generally use a full face helmet. There are Harley helmets that come in this style.

The main reason that these helmets are popular with some riders is that they offer full protection. They protect the biker from road rash in the event of a crash and bug detritus if one is struck on a ride. Whatever the reason, these helmets have not caught on with most riders and are the least used type of Harley helmet. These helmets usually have chin and forehead vents for comfort and can be bought in a variety of styles.
The second style is the three-quarters helmet. This type also offers a faced shield and protects more of the cheek area. However, the 3/4 Helmets do not protect the chin in case of an accident and do not offer the rider as much protection from a flying insect. These can also be worn without the visor to give a more open viewing area.

The Harley Classic Half Helmet
The classic Harley Davidson helmet though is the half helmet. These are generally a bowl that sits on top of the head and includes a chin strap for security. These are the most popular type for Harley riders, but offer the least protection in the event of an accident or other mishap. You can have a small visor with this type of helmet, but it is available upon request. Most riders don’t use one.

Whichever type is chosen, the most important consideration is safety. The reason that helmets began to be required is that they significantly reduce motorcycle fatalities. Whether one use the half, three quarter, of full version it is better than going helmetless. As many riders can attest a Harley Davidson helmet saved their life. Another consideration is that it is another place to display that all important Harley logo.
